The Gaze (Patty in Red)

This painting began with broad earthy washes of color. The gessoed board means that color will puddle in unexpected ways and areas, and the original applied texture remains visible. While painting from life I try to keep in mind that spontaneity and quick decisions will allow me to get down enough information in the short time the model will hold the pose. As I move quickly, I notice that the model’s gaze becomes more and more introspective.
